One thing that has always bothered me about the Oil Data Sheets is they only give you 100C/212F and 40C/104F for reference, but that tells you nothing about the cold climate characteristics. So, I got some interesting info using the online viscosity calculator. Just for fun i ran the Toyota 0w20 from -50 degrees Fahrenheit to 260 degrees Fahrenheite in values of 20 degrees.
You can do this with any oil if you have the 110C and 40C values off the oil data sheet, all you need to convert the Celsius to Fahrenheit. Online calculator link will be at the bottom.

TOYOTA 0W20 cSt VALUES FROM -50F TO 260F

-50F = 5736.96
-30F = 1969.91
-10F = 803.09
0 F = 539.1
20F = 267.67
40F = 147.73
60F = 88.05
80F = 56.18
100F = 37.93
120F = 26.84
140F = 19.72
160F = 15.02
180F = 11.77
200F = 9.45
220F = 7.74
240F = 6.46
260F = 5.48

If you compare the 20 weight oils and the 30 weight oils using this viscosity calculator at cold or extremely cold climates you can clearly see the advantages of the 20's in cold climates.

well most use Mobil 1 0-20wt advanced .. this is the oil I used for 3 years on my 2016 runner. many had a engine ticking issue on cold starts.
mobil oil does not have the additives compared to toyota 0-20WT SN PLUS. SN PLUS HAS MOLYBDENUM ..............

my engine now has very little noise on a cold start only a exhaust noise .this Toyota oil is a bit expensive $7.30 a qt... Mobil 1 I only pay 5qts for $28... much cheaper.

the Toyota oil got me a extra 1-2 MPG .. it works better than mobil...........

edit: looks like Mobil now has a Mobil Super Synthetic 0-20wt .. has SN PLUS.. I do not have the lab test on this oil.. this qt cost is $8.00 ...............

$4.83 per quart at my dealer when bought through their online parts site. They do ship though I just pick it up to save on shipping.

$4.83 - 0W20 Single Quart

or

$28.94 for a case of 6

If you live in cold / extremely cold climates this is something you need to see; the numbers dont lie. Toyota 0w20 cold flow characteristics are Far Superior to the other oils, by a huge amount. And on the top end at 250 degrees Fahrenheit is was right there with the rest. So if you prefer 0w20 and live up north, Toyota 0w20 full synthetic is a really good option. It has a superior service range in the 0w20 category.

Very interesting, thanks for that info. Those 0W20 motor oils listed all performed about the same at the high temps.
Have you seen any chart data for how they performed at high temps as compared to a 0W30, such as Amsoil?

I've always used Mobile 1 when I change it, along with the extended life filter from wal-mart.

There is a youtube channel called 'project farm' where a guy tests different oils. Apparently Mobile1 and Amazon basics (which I don't see on the list and didn't know existed) performed about the same as Mobile 1. Crazy.

Same goes for supertech from Walmart. Both Amazon and Walmart oils are made by the same company. In all honesty, looking at real data, Mobil 1 is really nothing special. There are better oils out there, people just keep using M1 because they think it's the best. Toyota oil is a better option than M1 and the 4.0 runs quieter with it.

The service range of the Toyota 0w20 is far superior to the other 0w20 oils i looked at; take a look at the attachment. At -20 degrees Fahrenheit the Toyota oil is shockingly far better, and on the top end at 250 degree Fahrenheit its right there with the rest. Fantastic service range!
